Question:
Dear Doggie Lovers…… Thank you for taking the time to read this message and maybe shed some light on a disturbing issue and concern involving our 4 year old Whippet… We have a 4 year old male Whippet – he has developed a Hypo thyroid condition – his T4 readings and Free T4 was a 5 respectively – we have him on ELTROXIN – 1 pill in Am and one in PM – his last Blood work showed the T4’s to be up to 19 – at that time he was on 1/2 pill twice a day so we doubled it to the present dose…Now – all he has developed a severe prostrate infection – he became depressed and lethargic – digital examination found the right side of the prostrate to be severely inflamed – he has been on BAYTRIL for 3 weeks now – examination at 1 week showed no further swelling on the prostrate nor did the dog flinch on examination where as with the first examination he was under obvious distress with pain when the right side of the prostrate was palpitated…palpitation now of the right side reveals a normal size prostrate however the Vet was concerned that if we discontinued the Baytril that he was on the infection could return very quickly and we would have defeated any gains we have made- he indicated he would like to keep him on Baytril for at least a 4 – 6 week period. If we have to remain on BAYTRIL for 4-6 weeks for it to be effective long term – the problem is in the mean etime our Whippet has gone from being outgoing sociable dog to a dog that hibernates himself in his crate – will not eat unless force fed by putting food on your hand and begging him to eat it - he will come and greet you when you come home – wags his tail but then runs right back to the safety of the crate – we are extremely worried about him – there seems to be something contraindicated between the Baytril and the Eltroxin that he is taking for a hypothyroid problem as a side effect where it is effecting him mentally - he is not a happy dog as he should be especially with the increase in the Eltronix…Baytril shows the loss of appetite as a side effect but I can not find any other in formation that would indicate a negative reaction with mixed with the Eltronix – something is changing his mental behavior – to a sad dog – one that has slept in our bed since the day we got him to now one that will sleep on the floor beside the bed – he refuses cookies which has been his favorite treat – something he loves - and we have doctored up his food with ground turkey, ground chicken, ground pork – anything to try and get him to eat on his own – we do have success with the ground turkey only . When he has the ground turkey he will eat most of his allotted food – by himself – other wise you have to beg him to eat by taking food on your hand and almost putting it inside his mouth – I am surehe is eating the food just to please me as he really does not want it. His urination and stool are normal…he does drink a normal amount of water in a day on his own – basically he just wants to stay in his crate and left alone. We have two other whippets whom he would usually play with especially with the puppy – now if the puppy comes near the crate to try and get him to play he just ignores the puppy – something that is not usual for him. Many times you would see him and the puppy in a fierce game of tug a war but that was before we started on the Baytril – the first day when he started on the Baytril he was ok – it was not until the second, third and fourth day that his behavior began to remarkablely change towards the negative. Any help would be grateful – if we take him off the Baytriol now beforebeing init for the 4 – 6 week period that the vet would like we run the risk of the prostrate infection re-occurring – he is an American and Canadian Champion and I hate the thought of having to neuter him to get rid of the prostrate problem but we will if that is what it takes to get our dog back – is there any information that any of you are aware of that might shed some light on the side effects of two drugs when taken together or are active within the body at the same times that are basically treating the hormonal problems of a hypothyroid and a prostrate – these two drugs together seem to be causing major problems for my dog…. Thank you for any help or info that can help or shed some light on this or some idea if the two drugs are causing metal anguish for my dear beloved dog – he is a show dog but first he is a loved member of our family…we hate seeing him this way – it is so frusturating – we feel so helpless…is there a site on the Internet that lists ‘doggie medication’ and it side effects dosages ect? Take care and thank you for any help you can send… Later –=[Don]=–
