Need chocolate Lab for stud! in MA

Question:

:P lease consider spaying her and sparing the world from more puppies.   Yes, especially Labs. Here in Pittsburgh, there are so many lab ads in the paper, prices are about $150 (more for females <sigh>), due to competition, and breeders who want to get rid of those pups before they lose their chubby puppy cuteness.  In contrast, near my parents’ place in upstate NY, usual price is $350. When you consider OFA, whatever else Labs go through, it’s a bargain and the breeder probably doesn’t make any money.  There are very few show dogs there, though, mostly field dogs. Jana, Barney and Jake

Response:

Jim- what you need more than a chocolate lab stud, is to think about your reasons for wanting to breed.  what does your bitch have to offer the breed. Is she an outstanding field dog? a super obedience/tracking/agility/guide-dog?  does she have superior confromation?  has she passed these traits on to other pups? has she OFA’d and CERF’d(hips and eyes check out) does she have skin problems, allergies, thyroid problems, tempernment problems?  what does she have that the allready HUDGE lab population can not do without?     and if she is this great- you would not want to breed her to any stud that answers your add– you would want to find out what studs are consistantly producing outstanding field dogs, with correct confromation that have had clear eyes, hips.  and make sure he would complement your bitches bloodlines.  If all you want to do is produce loving pets— take a walk arround your local humain society- they are full of loving pets, accidents and planned breedings alike.

Response:

-get a book on genetics and breeding -join a lab club- learn all you can about the breed -get involved in your breeds rescue network -go to field trials, preformance events, and see what dogs are producing the best dogs. -take a look at your female, have others in the breed take a look at her to see if she should be bred.

If your dog has had her hips OFA’d and other genetic testing done, is a breed champion (or at least well on her way), and has some working titles (what we would expect from someone planning to breed their dog), you would already know the well-known labs in the country, would be a member of the national breed club, and would be networked in with the other people with OFA’d CH. labs.  If you have to post personal ads, you should not be breeding your dog. Please consider spaying her and saving the world from MORE puppies. Elizabeth
