Tapazole

Question:

>and possible itching in the facial area.   Fortunately PeeWee does >not have any of these and is doing wonderfully on the Tapazole.

Unfortunately my Midget does have facial itching.  My vet does not believe it is the Tapazole doing it.  I have collected some documentation stating otherwise.  Hopefully, by the end of March the radioiodine center will be open and I can eventually get her off the Tapazole.  Other than the itching she has had no reaction.  She is on a small dose.  Less than 4 mg per day. Response:

We have a 4 year old that is taking Tapazole.  There are some possible side effects such as throwing up on occasion, swelling of the face if the dose is too strong, and possible itching in the facial area.   Fortunately PeeWee does not have any of these and is doing wonderfully on the Tapazole. ^..^

My 13.5 year old baby Sasha, was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and a kidney defect about 4 months ago. As soon as she is strong enough she’ll have the radio iodine treatment.   Are there any side effects from Tapazole? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Kelly

I hope there aren’t *too* many, because I take it myself for slight hyperthyroidism!  It can affect the liver, and in rare instances it can alter the blood count, but that can be checked w/a CBC. I *think* both of these adverse effects are true for both humans & felines.  My 13 yr. old cat was initially on Tapazole also, when she was 12, for hyperthyroidism. However, she had a pre-existing chronic liver condition, so she had a thyroidectomy since the Tapazole could possibly have exacerbated her liver condition.  Following her thyroidectomy she eventually went hypothyroid and is now taking Thyroxine – but this doesn’t pose a problem as the Tapazole had the potential to do.  BTW, the Tapazole is working for me, so far – my thyroid levels are now normal after having taken it for 3 months. Hope this helps. Cathy
